Abstract

Schizophrenia is a mental disorder that is often characterized by an abnormal social behavior as well as the failure to understand what to recognize is real. It often involves a range of problems in regards to thinking, emotions and behavior (Beck, 2011). It is critical to understand that signs and symptoms may at time vary but they reflect what can be described as an impaired aptitude to function.

Larry had several prominent symptoms that show that he has schizophrenia. The first is delusions; Larry had false beliefs that were actually not based on reality. Further, he had hallucinations; he heard things that did not actually exist. It is important to understand that for Larry, these things had a full force and impact of a normal experience (Szasz, 1988). It is of the essence to understand that indeed hallucination can often occur with any of the senses, but hearing voices can be described as the most common and this was seen with Larry.

Disorganized speech was yet another symptom that was observed in Larry, he had disorganized speech which came from disorganized thinking. Therefore, with Larry, it was difficult to form a complicated conversation with Larry (Tsuang, 2011). This is because effective communication was impaired and answers to different questions were partially impaired as well as unrelated. Larry also had negative symptoms as he spoke without inflection in a monotone manner. He also did not change facial expressions normally.

Some of the psychosocial symptoms that support the diagnosis include the fact that Larry experienced a withdrawal from both friends as well as family. He was often irritable and in a depressed mood and there seems to be a lack of motivation in the things that he did.
