Essay on Social Security System
The importance of social security cannot be underscored, it is important to understand that social security is the biggest social business in the United States. The current social security is extremely important and can be described as a safety net. Americans have been spending into social security for more than 80 years and have been collecting the earned benefits when they retire. The current system should not be changed as it continues to guarantee Americans that work and pay into the systems benefits by what they earn and contribute (Spicker, 2011).
The current social security should be put in a stable financial ground, and there should be slight adjustments to the program. These changes should be implemented gradually so that people can be able to plan for their future and ensure that there are no changes that will impact those in or near retirement. However, the system should not be changed. The current system protects the benefits of the people who count on them most; this includes surviving spouses and families, individuals that are disabled and cannot be able to work as well as low-wage workers.
It is essential to note that social security is much more than a retirement program. Among the 58 million Americans that currently receive social security benefits, there are disabled workers and spouses as well as dependents of deceased workers (Gustafsson, 2013).
In conclusion, social security can be said to guarantee benefits that are rock-solid and offers the commitment to American families (Campbell, 1977). It is of the essence to recognize that companies can go out of business, different pension’s plans can be terminated, the stock market can at times take a nose dive. However, with the current social security system, the social security benefits will be there for good times and the bad.
