The term menopause often refers to a woman’s final menstruation, and it usually occurs at the average of 51 years. Climacteric can be described as a word for the peri-menopause for the period leading up to menopause (Dale, 2009). It is important to realize that when a woman finally stops ovulating and having menstrual periods, this signifies that the climax of the reproductive years has come to an end. Climacteric is often defined as the decrease in reproductive capacity in women as well as men. For women, this often culminates into menopause.
In men, the climacteric period often involves hormonal, physiological as well as different chemical changes that often occur in all men generally between the ages of 40 and 55. This is often a physical condition that involves psychological, social, interpersonal and spiritual dimensions. There is often a decrease when it comes to the sexual drive, and the men might experience symptoms that are similar to female menopause (Dale, 2009). Further, although they remain fertile, the climacteric men may feel unsatisfied with achievements, lifestyles and they often experience a range of unpleasant emotions and the different physical symptoms that are often linked to the aging process.
Therefore, there are similarities that exist between climacteric period and menopause in women. The first includes the decrease in sexual drive in both sexes. It is of the essence to note that indeed there is a change in the hormonal balances that occur in both sexes, it is these changes that often bring about the changes that are seen in the climacteric period (Peterson, 2014). Further, both sexes feel a decreased sense of motivation in terms of their life achievements. The differences often occur in regards to fertility. Women lose their fertility whereas men do not.
