The fact that it failed to prevent the theft of so much information is in itself a great betrayal to their customers. Concerted efforts by a group of hackers bore fruit due to momentary lapses in judgment by the Target security team. In an effort to obtain millions of credit card numbers, hackers placed malware in the Target security and payment system.
This malware was designed to capture and record the customer’s credit card number during the payment process. Once the cashier swiped the card through the system, the malware would record the card number and store it on a server, ironically belonging to Target that was commandeered by the team of hackers (Riley, Elgin, Lawrence & Matlack, 2014). The hackers would then proceed to use well designed exfiltration malware that would then move the stolen card numbers to their computers in Russia.
